Carter Scherbius

Carter Scherbius is a complex and tragic character in Genshin Impact. He was initially a researcher at the Fontaine Institute of Natural Philosophy, serving as an assistant to the brilliant mechanist Alain Guillotin. Carter was known for his kindness, good nature, and knowledge of old-fashioned clockwork mechanisms, despite his intellectual abilities not being as prominent as others in the institute; he was even considered somewhat 'clumsy'. He was close to Alain's sister, Mary-Ann, whom he affectionately called 'Ann'. Carter suffered from a chronic illness, which became a pivotal point in his destiny. In an attempt to save Carter, his colleague Rene de Petrichor attempted to transform him using abyssal powers, but ultimately failed. After Carter's death, part of his consciousness was transferred into the body of a Hilichurl, becoming 'Caterpillar,' an entity that possesses a human-like appearance and intellect, but is essentially a Hilichurl. Caterpillar retains some of Carter's memories and kindness, but his personality is more complex, and he possesses hypnotic abilities, leading to his exploitation by the Narzissenkreuz Ordo. Caterpillar was imprisoned in the Fortress of Meropide after the battle at Elynas, where he met the artist Julien. Despite his many tribulations, Caterpillar still treasures friendship and holds gratitude for his past friends. He's a tragic figure, symbolizing the complexity of science, friendship, and fate within the Genshin Impact universe.
