Neon Genesis Evangelion (Japanese: 新世紀エヴァンゲリオン, Shin Seiki Evangerion), often abbreviated as EVA, is a Japanese original anime television series produced by GAINAX and directed by Hideaki Anno. The series aired on TV Tokyo in Japan from October 1995 to March 1996, comprising 26 episodes. Set in 2015, the story revolves around the aftermath of the 'Second Impact' fifteen years prior, where humanity faces the threat of mysterious beings called 'Angels'. To combat them, the UN establishes a special agency called NERV, developing giant humanoid weapons called 'Evangelions', which are piloted by 14-year-old teenagers. Protagonist Shinji Ikari is forced to become an EVA pilot, fighting alongside Rei Ayanami and Asuka Langley against the Angels. The series is known for its complex plot, psychological depth, religious symbolism, and exploration of human nature, sparking widespread debate and becoming a cultural phenomenon, considered a landmark work in Japanese animation history.
