Video Girl Ai

"Video Girl Ai" (電影少女 Den'ei Shōjo), is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Masakazu Katsura. It was originally serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shōnen Jump from 1989 to 1992. The story revolves around Yota Moteuchi, a heartbroken high school student who stumbles upon a mysterious video store. He rents a tape titled "I'll Cheer You Up!", and a video girl named Ai Amano emerges from the screen. However, due to a malfunction with Yota’s VCR, Ai appears with glitches, becoming tomboyish, rude, and emotional. Ai is meant to help Yota pursue his crush, Moemi Hayakawa, but as the story unfolds, she begins to develop feelings for Yota. The manga also includes a sequel, "Video Girl Len", which features a different video girl. The series has been adapted into an OVA, a live-action film, and several live-action TV dramas. It is well-regarded for its blend of science fiction, romance, and comedy, as well as its poignant portrayal of adolescent emotions, and has garnered a wide global fanbase.
