Puni Puni Poemy (ぷにぷに☆ぽえみぃ) is a two-part Japanese original video animation (OVA) spin-off from the manga and anime television series Excel Saga. It features some of that series' secondary characters and many of its staff, primarily director Shinichi Watanabe. Like Excel Saga, Puni Puni Poemy is a parody of other anime, manga, and various aspects of popular culture, though in this case with the magical girl genre providing its primary focus and general structure. The series originated as an in-joke from an episode of Excel Saga; Watanabe decided to take the in-joke to its most extreme logical conclusion, creating the series. The story revolves around 10-year-old Poemi Watanabe, who aspires to be a voice actress. After her adoptive parents are killed by aliens, she moves in with her classmate Futaba Aasu and her six sisters. When an alien robot attacks the city, Poemi discovers a talking magic fish which, when skinned and used as a wand, transforms her into the magical girl Puni Puni Poemy. The anime is known for its bizarre, outlandish, and nonsensical humor, and it heavily riffs on the magical girl anime genre. It's also known for its parodies of other anime and pop culture, and for breaking the fourth wall, with Poemi often directly addressing the audience or behind-the-scenes crew.
