Gate Keepers (ゲートキーパーズ, Gēto Kīpāzu) began as a tactical role-playing game developed by Entertainment Software Publishing and published by Kadokawa Shoten for the PlayStation. It was later adapted into a manga series written by Hiroshi Yamaguchi and illustrated by Keiji Gotoh, and an anime series produced by Gonzo, which first aired on April 3, 2000. A six-episode original video animation (OVA) sequel, Gate Keepers 21, was released in 2002. The series is set in 1969, a period of rapid economic and social development in post-World War II Japan. Unbeknownst to humans, interdimensional beings known as "Invaders" have emerged, plotting to take over the world by causing chaos and turning humans into robotic minions. In response, the secret organization Alien Exterminating Global Intercept System (A.E.G.I.S.) was formed. A.E.G.I.S. relies on “Gate Keepers,” individuals with the ability to open dimensional "Gates" and harness paranormal energy, granting them superpowers effective against the Invaders. While A.E.G.I.S. has branches worldwide, the series focuses on the Far East division in Japan, headquartered beneath Tategami High School, which acts as a facade for recruiting new Gate Keepers. The high school location allows agents to be readily available while attending classes.
