Azumanga Daioh (Japanese: あずまんが大王, Hepburn: Azumanga Daiō) is a Japanese yonkoma comedy manga series written and illustrated by Kiyohiko Azuma. It was serialized in Dengeki Daioh magazine from 1999 to 2002. The series follows the everyday lives of a group of high school girls and their teachers, focusing on their humorous interactions and often absurd situations. The manga is characterized by its four-panel format, its quirky and memorable characters, and its mix of realism with surreal elements. In 2002, J.C.Staff produced an anime television series adaptation titled Azumanga Daioh: The Animation, which faithfully adapted the manga's storylines and gained popularity for its lighthearted comedy and excellent voice acting. The anime aired as five-minute segments on weekdays and then as 25-minute compilations on weekends, totaling 26 episodes. In addition to the television series, there was a theatrical short and an original net animation. Known for its unique humor and warm atmosphere, Azumanga Daioh remains a classic in the genre of high school comedy anime, significantly influencing later series.
