Tokyo Mew Mew (東京ミュウミュウ), also known as Mew Mew Power, is a Japanese shōjo manga series written by Reiko Yoshida and illustrated by Mia Ikumi. It was originally serialized in Kodansha's manga magazine Nakayoshi from September 2000 to February 2003, and later published in seven tankōbon volumes. The story focuses on five girls who are infused with the DNA of rare animals, granting them special powers that allow them to transform into "Mew Mews". Led by Ichigo Momomiya, the girls protect the Earth from aliens who wish to "reclaim" it. The series was adapted into a 52-episode anime series produced by Studio Pierrot. The anime aired in Japan from April 6, 2002, to March 29, 2003. A two-volume sequel to the manga, Tokyo Mew Mew à la Mode, was serialized in Nakayoshi from April 2003 to February 2004, and introduced a new character, Berry Shirayuki. The series also inspired two video games: a puzzle adventure game for the Game Boy Advance and a role-playing game for the PlayStation. Tokyo Mew Mew was well-received for its cute character designs and engaging storylines, earning praise among English-speaking audiences and achieving top sales on various charts. It was also localized into an English dub, Mew Mew Power, which aired in the U.S. and other English-speaking countries, garnering high viewership despite some edits. In 2020, a new anime adaptation, Tokyo Mew Mew New, was released alongside a spin-off, Tokyo Mew Mew Olé!, featuring male Mew Mews.
