Vampire Princess Miyu is a Japanese horror manga series created by Narumi Kakinouchi and Toshiki Hirano, which has been adapted into anime. The initial anime adaptation was a 4-episode original video animation (OVA) released in 1988, licensed by AnimEigo. It was later adapted into a 26-episode television series in 1997, licensed by Tokyopop and later by Maiden Japan. The series centers around Miyu and her Western Shinma companion, Larva. Miyu, born of a human and a Shinma, is a vampire who was awakened as the Guardian, tasked with hunting down stray Shinma and sending them back to the darkness. Miyu appears to be a 13-14 year old girl but is much older. She is not harmed by sunlight, holy water, or crucifixes, and can be seen in a mirror. Though she needs to drink blood to survive, she chooses her 'victims' carefully, granting those who have suffered tragic losses the dream of being with their lost loved ones, in exchange for their blood. She and Larva embark on a journey that explores the weakness of the human heart and the tragic loss of innocence.
