The End of Evangelion (Japanese: 新世紀エヴァンゲリオン劇場版 Air/まごころを、君に), is a 1997 Japanese animated film written by Hideaki Anno and co-directed by Anno and Kazuya Tsurumaki. It serves as an alternate ending to the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion, which was controversial for its abstract final two episodes. The story follows teenagers Shinji Ikari, Rei Ayanami, and Asuka Langley Soryu, who pilot mechas called Evangelion to fight enemies known as Angels that threaten humanity. Shinji is subjected to the Human Instrumentality Project, a process that merges human souls into a single divine entity. The film is divided into two parts: "Air" and "Sincerely Yours," and is a reimagining of the final two episodes of the TV series. It has been praised for its violence, direction, editing, and emotional power, though some reviewers have criticized its oblique religious symbolism. The film was a box office success and is frequently cited as one of the greatest animated films ever made. It was released along with Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth, and later edited and reissued as Revival of Evangelion.
