Pet Shop of Horrors

Pet Shop of Horrors (Japanese: ペットショップ オブ ホラーズ) is a Japanese horror manga series created by Matsuri Akino. The story revolves around the enigmatic Count D, the proprietor of a peculiar pet shop located in the heart of Chinatown. The animals sold at this shop possess strange, humanoid appearances and come with a contract that includes three major clauses. These clauses vary depending on the animal but all include a stipulation not to show the pet to anyone. Breaking the contract usually results in horrific consequences, for which the pet shop claims no liability. The manga is episodic, with each chapter telling a different story and introducing new characters. However, a recurring storyline follows Detective Leon Orcot, who initially suspects Count D of criminal activity, using the pet shop as a front for drug trafficking. As the series progresses, Leon learns more about the pet shop and Count D, forming a strange friendship with him. The manga was originally published by Asahi Sonorama in 10 volumes and was later licensed in North America by Tokyopop. In addition, the manga was adapted into a 4-episode OVA anime series.
