.hack//Liminality

.hack//Liminality is a four-episode OVA series that is an integral part of the .hack franchise, released alongside the PlayStation 2 games. What sets Liminality apart is its focus on the real world, contrasting with the game's MMORPG 'The World'. The series revolves around Junichiro Tokuoka, a former employee of CC Corp, who investigates the mysterious comas affecting players of 'The World'. He encounters Mai Minase, a girl who awoke from a coma, and other players from 'The World', who together work to uncover the truth behind these comas and find a way to save the victims. Each episode focuses on different characters, gradually revealing the truth and interweaving with the game's storyline. Liminality not only enriches the game's universe, but also presents a more complex .hack universe, highlighting the connection between the real and virtual worlds and the potential issues of virtual reality technology.
