Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death & Rebirth (新世紀エヴァンゲリオン 劇場版 DEATH & REBIRTH シト新生) is a 1997 Japanese animated film and the first installment in the Neon Genesis Evangelion film series. It consists of two parts: Death, a recap of the first 24 episodes of the TV series with additional animation, and Rebirth, a preview of the then-upcoming The End of Evangelion. Rebirth depicts the initial stages of the Human Instrumentality Project and SEELE's invasion of the Geofront. Due to production constraints, Rebirth only covered the first part of what became The End of Evangelion. The film was created in response to the TV series' success and fan demand for an alternate ending. It has since been re-edited and re-released several times. The Death portion has variations, like Death(True) and Death(True)². The English dub made some changes, such as altering a sound effect from a 'slap' to a 'gunshot', which sparked controversy. In Japan, it grossed ¥1.1 billion between March and October 1997. The film has also been released on home video in various formats, including VHS, DVD, and Blu-ray.
