Tenchi in Tokyo (Shin Tenchi Muyo!) is the third major installment in the Tenchi Muyo! franchise, produced by AIC and aired on TV Tokyo in 1997. Unlike its predecessors, Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki and Tenchi Universe, Tenchi in Tokyo features a completely original story and introduces new characters. The story revolves around Tenchi Masaki moving from Okayama to Tokyo to become an apprentice at a Shinto shrine. He meets Sakuya Kumashiro, a new classmate, and their relationship quickly develops, sparking jealousy from the girls back in Okayama. Simultaneously, a mysterious villain named Yugi and her henchmen start causing trouble in Tokyo, threatening Tenchi and his friends' relationships. This series is known for its significant departures from previous entries, including a more comedic and wacky tone, "monster of the week" style episodes, and deformed animation. While the main cast returns, their behaviors are significantly different. Unlike Tenchi Universe, Tenchi in Tokyo completely departs from the Jurai connection and focuses more on high school life, romantic relationships and a new antagonist. The series received mixed reviews due to its changes in plot and character designs.
