Sakura Wars (Japanese: サクラ大戦) is a Japanese multimedia franchise created by Oji Hiroi and co-developed by Sega and Red Entertainment. Set in a fictionalized Taishō era with steampunk elements, the series revolves around groups of women with magical abilities using steam-powered mecha to combat demonic threats. The franchise began with the eponymous video game released on the Sega Saturn in 1996 and has since expanded to include anime, manga, and stage shows. The games blend tactical role-playing, dating sim, and visual novel genres, and are classified as "dramatic adventure games." The main games revolve around the Imperial Combat Revue, a secret force disguised as a theater troupe, whose members, primarily women with strong spiritual powers, pilot steam-powered mecha called "Koubu." The series is renowned for its unique setting, charming characters, and memorable music, and has garnered a large fanbase both in Japan and overseas. As of 2022, the series has sold over 5.8 million copies and has received widespread critical acclaim.
