Blue Gender (ブルージェンダー, Burū Jendā) is a 26-episode Japanese anime series created by Ryosuke Takahashi, broadcast in Japan from 1999 to 2000. The anime was produced by AIC animation studio and distributed in the United States by Funimation. Set in the 2030s, Blue Gender depicts a world where Earth is overrun by insect-like alien creatures called “the Blue,” which contain a newly evolved B-cell and feed on humans. Most of the surviving human race has relocated to Second Earth, a massive space station orbiting the planet. The plot primarily follows the relationship between Yuji Kaido, a young man cryogenically frozen due to a B-cell disease, and Marlene Angel, a soldier from Second Earth, as they work together to return to Second Earth and engage in military operations against the Blue. The anime is known for its dark themes, violent scenes, and exploration of humanity. There is also a compilation movie titled Blue Gender: The Warrior, which uses some old footage as well as new animation and provides an alternate ending to the TV series.
