Legend of Himiko (火魅子伝, Himiko-Den) is a Japanese media franchise consisting of an anime television series, a manga series, a novel series, and a PlayStation game. All four were released in early 1999. The PlayStation game was created by Hakuhodo and was released in Japan on March 11, 1999. The manga is a single volume series written by Kō Maisaka and illustrated by Oh! great, released in Japan by Kadokawa Shoten in early 1999. It has been licensed in France by Panini Comics and in Germany by Planet Manga. The 12-episode television series aired on TV Tokyo between January 7, 1999, and March 31, 1999, produced by Group TAC. The anime was released in the US in a 3-disc set by Central Park Media. The anime is technically based on the PlayStation game, even though the anime started airing before the game was officially released. The story is set in ancient Japan, centered around the nation of Yamatai. Yamatai is under threat from the overseas kingdom of Kune. In an attempt to stave off an invasion, the people of Yamatai try to install a Queen, chosen by the mysterious Bokka. However, Kune attacks before the selection is completed, dispersing the Queen candidates. The Bokka takes refuge in a newborn girl named Himiko, transporting her to modern times. Years later, Himiko and her classmate Kutani are transported back to ancient Japan, joining the queen candidates in their fight against Kune's rule.
