GALACTIC PATROL Lensman (GALACTIC PATROL レンズマン) is a Japanese anime television series based on the Lensman novels by E. E. “Doc” Smith. The 25-episode series aired in Japan from October 6, 1984 to August 8, 1985. The story follows young Kimball Kinnison who, while leaving home for a broader education, encounters a crashed Galactic Patrol ship. The dying pilot gives him a mysterious Lens. The semi-sentient Lens, now implanted in his hand, becomes the catalyst for changes in Kim’s life, including his father’s death, a space battle, and an encounter with Galactic Patrol nurse Chris. Impelled by the Lens, he discovers a new world of experiences opening before him, and he risks his life to save Chris and the universe. Despite sharing character and organization names, as well as central themes with the original novels, artistic license led to a final product that significantly differed from the source material. Although produced with the knowledge and consent of Smith's estate, the executors were so displeased with the result that they rejected any other adaptation proposals for several years. A heavily edited English dub of some episodes was released by Harmony Gold USA under the title Lensman: Power of the Lens, but the full series was never dubbed into English.
