Like the Clouds, Like the Wind is a Japanese anime television film produced by Studio Pierrot, adapted from Ken'ichi Sakemi's 1989 novel, Kōkyū Shōsetsu. It was broadcast on the Nippon Television Network System on March 21, 1990. The story is set in a fictional dynasty reminiscent of early 17th century China and follows Ginga, a young, energetic country girl who volunteers to become a concubine for the new Emperor. Ginga's motivation is a chance at a regular food supply. At the palace, she meets other potential concubines and they must learn to read, write, learn the country's history, and royal court manners. Ginga's enthusiasm often leads to trouble, but also helps her uncover a plot by the former Emperor's wife to rebel against the new Emperor. Despite the involvement of several Studio Ghibli staff members, the film was often mistakenly believed to be a Ghibli production.
