Demon Lord Dante (魔王ダンテ, Maō Dante) is a horror-themed manga series created by Go Nagai, which also has an anime adaptation. The original manga was serialized in Kodansha's Bokura Magazine in 1971, telling the story of high school student Ryo Utsugi and the ancient demon lord Dante. Ryo, plagued by nightmares, is possessed by Dante in the Himalayas and gains demonic powers. Dante is depicted as a massive monster with bird legs, bat wings, and a human face. After gaining power, Ryo engages in fierce battles against God and his followers, gradually uncovering Dante's past. Dante was once a resident of Sodom who fell into demonhood for defying God, his soul splitting into Judas and Ryo. The manga challenges traditional views of good and evil, portraying God as a villain and the demon lord as a symbol of resistance against oppression. The series was revived in 2002, with new manga and anime that delve deeper into the complexity of the characters and story. In the new version, Ryo merges with Dante and fights against God and his messengers, ultimately reuniting with his sister, who is controlled by God, and walking towards the future together.
