Betterman is a Japanese anime television series produced by Sunrise Studio 7 and directed by Yoshitomo Yonetani. It aired on TV Tokyo in 1999. Sharing the same universe as The King of Braves GaoGaiGar, Betterman focuses more on biotechnology than robots. Set in 2006, the world is threatened by a mysterious disease called "Algernon," which causes suicidal and homicidal behaviors. The protagonist, Keita Aono, accidentally enters the underground amusement park "Bottom the World" and reunites with his childhood friend Hinoki Sai, who pilots the giant robot "Kakuseijin 01" as a head diver. To escape the park, they collaborate and begin investigating the root cause of the strange disease. The mysterious life form known as "Betterman" has the ability to change its form depending on the situation. The series delves into the conflict between humanity and nature, as well as the unknowns in the human evolution process. It also incorporates elements of Jungian psychology, adding depth and philosophical reflection. The series is also linked to The King of Braves GaoGaiGar through the sequel "The King of Kings: GaoGaiGar VS. Betterman", which fully explains the connection between the two series.
