Popotan (ぽぽたん) is a Japanese adult visual novel developed by Petit Ferret, featuring character designs by Akio Watanabe under the alias Poyoyon Rock. It was initially released as a PC game on CD-ROM on December 13, 2002, and later re-released on DVD-ROM and PlayStation 2, with some scenes removed. The title 'Popotan' is a nonsensical word intended to reflect the prominence of dandelions (tanpopo in Japanese). Popotan has also been adapted into other media including a novel series, manga series, anime television series, a radio drama, and several art and reference books. The game centers around Chris, a drifter who encounters three sisters and their maid in a mansion near the ruins of Tokyo in the distant future. The gameplay involves reading dynamic text and making choices that progress the plot, allowing players to pursue romantic relationships with the three sisters. The story also unravels mysteries surrounding a giant dandelion-like spire that led to the destruction of Tokyo. The game is known for its distinctive character designs and plot, gaining popularity and spawning various related works.
