Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics, also known as Grimm Masterpiece Theater (グリム名作劇場, Gurimu Meisaku Gekijō), is a Japanese anime anthology series produced by Nippon Animation. This series adapts classic tales from the Brothers Grimm's “Grimms' Fairy Tales,” with some liberties taken in their adaptation. The anime consists of two seasons: “Grimm Masterpiece Theater” (aired from October 21, 1987, to March 30, 1988, with 24 episodes) and “New Grimm Masterpiece Theater” (aired from October 2, 1988, to March 26, 1989, with 23 episodes). Most episodes present standalone fairy tales, while some stories are told over two or four episodes, totaling 41 adapted stories. The series employs a green-haired female pixie as a narrator, but she only announces the titles and does not participate in the plot. Besides staying true to the original tales, some stories were edited, removing tales not of German origin, such as "Puss in Boots" and "Bluebeard." The series was produced in Japan by Asahi Broadcasting Corporation and aired in Europe, Latin America, the Philippines, and other regions, with the English version airing on Nickelodeon in the United States. The Japanese opening theme is “Rainbow Bridge” (虹の橋), and the ending theme is “My Town’s Merry-Go-Round” (私の町はメリー・ゴランド), both sung by Ushio Hashimoto. The English version features music composed by Haim Saban and Shuki Levy. The anime has a large cult following, and in 2021, Discotek Media released a Blu-ray version, featuring both the original Japanese and English dubbed versions.
