Gunslinger Girl

Gunslinger Girl is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Yu Aida, set in modern Italy. It revolves around a government organization called the Social Welfare Agency, which is ostensibly a charitable institution but secretly a military counter-intelligence and counter-terrorism group. The Agency recruits young girls who have experienced trauma and near-death experiences, fitting them with cybernetic implants to become highly skilled assassins with enhanced strength and reflexes. Each girl is paired with an adult male handler, referred to as a 'fratello' (brother), who is responsible for their training, welfare, and field performance. Through 'conditioning,' the girls are brainwashed to be completely loyal to their handlers. The series explores the ethical implications of using children as weapons and the complex relationships between the cyborg girls and their handlers. The manga was serialized from 2002 to 2012 and has been adapted into two anime seasons and video games.
