"Submarine 707R" (サブマリン707R) is a two-episode anime OVA based on Satoru Ozawa's manga "Submarine 707", produced by Group TAC and Sony. The OVAs were released on September 26, 2003 and April 24, 2004 respectively. Set in the near future, the story revolves around a mysterious organization called USR, led by Admiral Red, who aims to halt human exploitation of the seas through attacks on ships and ports using advanced technology. To counter the USR, the world's navies unite to form the Peace-Keeping Navy (PKN). Japan's submarine, the 707, an old diesel sub, is commanded by Captain Youhei Hayami, a skilled submariner. During a USR attack, the 707 sacrifices itself to protect the PKN flagship. Six months later, Captain Hayami takes command of the new 707, leading both old and new crew members to once again battle Admiral Red. Despite the show's attempt at technical accuracy, it received mixed reviews due to its plot, some design choices, and the limited two-episode format. Especially in Japan, some critics felt it strayed from the manga and failed to complete the story. However, it was praised for its music, CGI, and main character designs. The opening was directed by Hideaki Anno.
