The Silent Service (Japanese: 沈黙の艦隊, Chinmoku no Kantai) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Kaiji Kawaguchi, serialized in Kodansha's Weekly Morning magazine from 1988 to 1996. The manga is notable for its exploration of submarine warfare, nuclear conflict, and international politics. Set during the Cold War, it follows the story of a nuclear submarine, the Seabat, secretly built by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force in cooperation with the U.S. Navy. During its maiden voyage, the captain, Shiro Kaieda, suddenly declares the submarine an independent state, "Yamato," and embarks on a series of actions challenging the international order. The work introduces political concepts such as "Separation of Politics and Military", "Yamato Insurance", "World Government," and "Silent Fleet Plan," prompting deep reflection on global peace. The manga has been adapted into an anime TV special and OVA series, and a live-action film was released in 2023, further expanding its influence. The work explores complex issues of national sovereignty, the threat of nuclear weapons, and international cooperation, making it a significant work due to its profound political and social commentary.
