Cyborg 009: The Cyborg Soldier is a 2001 anime series that retells the original manga by Shotaro Ishinomori. Directed by Jun Kawagoe, it premiered on TV Tokyo from October 13, 2001, to September 29, 2002. The series updates the 1964-1967 stories serialized in Weekly Shonen King and Weekly Shonen Magazine, and incorporates select stories from later runs of the series. This incarnation also includes an OVA special consisting of episodes 49-51, which are not in continuity with the main series (1-48). These special episodes are a loose adaptation of Shotaro Ishinomori's final work, Cyborg 009: Conclusion GOD'S WAR, and are subtitled with "Prologue". The anime follows nine individuals from around the world who are kidnapped and transformed into cyborgs with superhuman abilities by the evil Black Ghost organization. With the help of Dr. Isaac Gilmore, a Black Ghost scientist, the cyborgs escape and rebel against their captors. They band together to prevent Black Ghost from initiating a world war through weapons of mass destruction. The series primarily adapts major arcs from the manga, such as "Birth," "Assassins," "The Mythos Cyborgs," and "Underground Empire of Yomi," adding contemporary elements and original stories to enhance character development and draw from other manga series. Furthermore, it introduces the concepts of “First Generation Cyborgs” and “Second Generation Cyborgs” to enrich the characters' backstories.
