Shin Hakkenden, also known as "Legend of the Eight Divine Swords", is a Japanese anime series that aired on TV Tokyo from April 3 to September 25, 1999, with a total of 26 episodes. The anime was produced by TV Aichi and teamM.S.C.D., with animation production by Public & Basic. The story is set in the distant future, where Earth is on the brink of destruction due to overpopulation and environmental degradation. To escape an impending meteor impact, Queen Fuse leads humanity in building the spaceship Yatsufusa and sets out on a journey through space. They eventually reach a mysterious star system called Tenkai. However, the Queen’s attempt to restore Earth disrupts the balance of the universe, leading to a loss of faith in her and the dispersal of humanity to eight satellites surrounding Tenkai. The story takes place in the year 2588 of the divine era, drawing inspiration from the epic novel Nansō Satomi Hakkenden, with character names based on the eight virtues: "Jin, Gi, Rei, Chi, Chu, Shin, Ko, Tei." The anime features the opening theme song "Memories" by Angela, and the ending theme songs "Kitto Onaji Hoshi no Naka de" by Friend of mine (episodes 1-13) and "Atarashii Hibi Shin Hakkenden Special Mix" by RIZCO (episodes 14-26). Despite some critical reviews for its animation quality, Shin Hakkenden remains a science-fiction adaptation with a unique narrative.
