"Shura no Toki: Age of Chaos," also known as "Mutsu Enmei-ryū Gaiden: Shura no Toki," is a Japanese historical manga series created by Masatoshi Kawahara. It began serialization in Kodansha's Monthly Shonen Magazine in 1989 and concluded in 2005, with a total of 15 tankobon volumes. A prequel to "Shura no Mon," the story revolves around the Mutsu family, practitioners of the invincible unarmed martial art, Mutsu Enmei-ryu, and their battles with powerful warriors throughout history. The manga intertwines the Mutsu family lineage with renowned historical swordsmen, such as Miyamoto Musashi, Yagyu Jubei, and Sakamoto Ryoma. In 2004, it was adapted into a 26-episode anime series by Media Factory and Studio Comet, airing on TV Tokyo. The anime primarily focuses on the first three story arcs of the manga, showcasing the stories of three generations of the Mutsu family: Yakumo Mutsu with Miyamoto Musashi, Takato Mutsu with Jubei Yagyu, and Izumi Mutsu with Sakamoto Ryoma. The anime was licensed by Media Blasters for distribution in North America, making it the only part of the Shura franchise to have an English release. The series is celebrated for its engaging plot and dynamic martial arts sequences.
