Dai Yamato Zero-go is an original animated video created by Leiji Matsumoto, initially planned as a new installment in the Space Battleship Yamato series. However, due to a lawsuit between Matsumoto and Yoshinobu Nishizaki over the franchise rights, it became an entirely unrelated work. The story takes place in the year 3199 of the cosmic calendar, when the Milky Way galaxy, where Earth’s solar system is located, is attacked by a powerful enemy from a neighboring galaxy. The combined forces of the Milky Way suffer repeated defeats, leaving only six fleets remaining. As the alliance headquarters is destroyed and the collapse of the Milky Way Alliance looms, the Great Yamato Zero unexpectedly appears, embarking on a mission to assist the alliance in one last battle. The design of the Great Yamato Zero largely resembles that of Space Battleship Yamato, but it is distinguished by a disc-shaped section forcefully embedded in the middle of the hull and large, reverse gull-wings on both sides. It consists of 5 episodes and was initially released as an OVA, and later available online and in some video rental stores. Notably, the setting of Dai Yamato Zero-go was later revealed in the sequel to the Galaxy Express 999 movie, Ultimate Journey, overseen by Matsumoto, to be a disguised form of the Super Time Battleship Mahoroba.
