Sazae-san (サザエさん) is a Japanese yonkoma manga series written and illustrated by Machiko Hasegawa. It was first published in Hasegawa's local paper, the Fukunichi Shinbun, on April 22, 1946. When the Asahi Shimbun wished to have Hasegawa draw the comic for their paper, she moved to Tokyo in 1949 with the explanation that the main characters had moved from Kyūshū to Tokyo as well. The manga dealt with everyday life and contemporary situations in Tokyo until Hasegawa retired and ended the series on February 21, 1974.
In October 1969, Fuji Television began airing an anime television adaptation by TCJ (later renamed Eiken), which is still on the air today, holding the Guinness World Record for the longest-running animated television series. The anime centers on the Isono and Fuguta families and depicts their daily lives. The anime has aired every Sunday from 6:30 to 7:00 PM and has never changed its broadcast time. The format is in the form of three vignettes.
While the series is known for its lighthearted and humorous style, it is also noted for its depiction of traditional Japanese family values. The anime is often viewed as a nostalgic representation of Japanese society, as it lacks elements of modern technology and culture.
