Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo is a Japanese anime series produced by Gonzo, loosely based on Alexandre Dumas' classic novel, The Count of Monte Cristo. Set in the year 5053, it tells the story of Edmond Dantès, a sailor who was betrayed and imprisoned, who escapes with the help of a mysterious force called "Gankutsuou" and becomes the Count of Monte Cristo, seeking revenge. The anime is mainly told from the perspective of Albert de Morcerf, the son of one of the Count's enemies. While adapting the original storyline, it features numerous plot and character differences. Gankutsuou is known for its distinctive visual style, blending Western Impressionism and Japanese Ukiyo-e. It utilizes bold colors and overlaid textures, creating a unique visual experience. The music is composed by Jean-Jacques Burnel of The Stranglers, who also sings the theme songs. Besides the anime, the story has been adapted into a CD drama, novels, and a manga. The manga, drawn by director Mahiro Maeda, focuses on the Count's inner world and revenge plans, and is darker and more violent than the anime.
