Karas (鴉-KARAS-), also known as Karasu, is a six-part original video animation (OVA) series produced by Tatsunoko Production to commemorate its 40th anniversary. The story is set in a fictional Shinjuku, where humans and yōkai coexist. The protagonist, Otoha, a former yakuza, is chosen as a Karas, a city guardian capable of transforming into a car, an aircraft, and an armored warrior. He must stop his corrupt predecessor, Eko, from taking over Tokyo. The plot also includes side stories about humans affected by Eko's scheme. The anime is known for its blend of 2D and 3D animation techniques and won the Best Original Video award at the 2006 Tokyo Anime Awards. The series explores themes of conflict between traditional culture and modern society, as well as human relationships. Despite its excellent visuals, some reviewers found the plot too complex and confusing. Karas is distinguished by its unique dark style and fluid combat scenes, which blend Japanese mythology with modern urban elements. The protagonist, Otoha, is burdened by a dark past and is tasked with protecting the city. The anime is full of intense action sequences and thought-provoking social themes. This series is also appreciated for its complex storyline and deep exploration of character psychology, although this may come across as abstruse at times.
