In baseball, the winning pitcher is the pitcher who is on the winning team when the game concludes with their team in the lead. Winning pitchers are categorized as either starting pitchers or relief pitchers. To earn a win as a starting pitcher, they typically need to pitch for a minimum number of innings, which depends on the game's length. For instance, in a nine-inning game, a starting pitcher usually has to pitch at least five innings while holding a lead when they leave the game. If a starting pitcher doesn’t meet these criteria, the win may be awarded to a relief pitcher. A relief pitcher earns the win if they enter the game while their team is behind or tied, and then their team takes the lead and holds it through the end of the game while that pitcher is on the field. Also, if the team is in a deficit, but comes back to have the lead when a relief pitcher is on the field and win, that relief pitcher is awarded the win. Winning pitcher is an important statistic to judge pitcher's performance, although, it could also be affected by the team’s run-scoring ability and defense. Consequently, stats like Quality Start (QS) are also used for evaluating pitcher’s performance. Overall, the winning pitcher represents the contribution a pitcher made to their team’s victory.
