Set in late 19th-century Victorian London, it tells the story of Emma, a maid, and William Jones, a member of the gentry, and their cross-class love affair. The manga is renowned for its detailed portrayal of Victorian London without fantasy or speculative elements. Serialized in Comic Beam magazine, it has been collected into 10 tankōbon volumes. It has also been adapted into two anime seasons by Studio Pierrot and Ajia-do Animation Works, faithfully recreating locations such as King's Cross Station, the Crystal Palace, and Covent Garden. The story focuses on Emma and William's romantic relationship, which faces societal and familial opposition due to their different social classes. The series is acclaimed for its historical research and accurate depiction of Victorian customs, winning an Excellence Prize at the 2005 Japan Media Arts Festival. Its English translation was also recognized as one of the best graphic novels for teens by Library Journal and the Young Adult Library Services Association in 2007 and 2008 respectively.
