"Coo of the Far Seas" (also known as "Coo: From a Distant Ocean Came Coo") is a Japanese novel written by Tamio Kageyama, which won the 99th Naoki Prize in 1988. The story, set in Fiji in the South Pacific, centers around marine biologist Tetsuro Obata and his son Yousuke, who discover a strange creature they name "Coo". They soon learn that Coo is a baby plesiosaur, a marine reptile that has survived for 65 million years. Yousuke forms a strong bond with Coo, but Coo's existence attracts the attention of a French secret organization seeking to exploit Coo for nuclear testing purposes. The narrative blends themes of friendship between a boy and a creature, adventure, and environmental awareness. In 1993, the novel was adapted into an animated film of the same name, generating significant attention and discussions in Japan. Additionally, the story was adapted into a radio drama and manga.
