"Blue Sonnet," also known as "Akai Kiba Blue Sonnet" (紅い牙 ブルー・ソネット), is a manga series created by Masahiro Shibata, serialized in Hana to Yume magazine from 1981 to 1987, totaling 19 volumes. It is part of the larger "Akai Kiba" series and tells the story of Lan Komatsuzaki, a girl with psychic abilities, and Sonnet, a cyborg trained to be the ultimate weapon. Sonnet is sent to Japan to monitor Lan, who is believed to be controlled by the rage of the "Crimson Fang." As they fight, Sonnet begins to rediscover her humanity while Lan must struggle to maintain hers and control the Crimson Fang’s power. The manga was adapted into a five-episode Original Video Animation (OVA) series by Mushi Productions in 1989. The OVA was released on VHS and LaserDisc in North America in 1990 and is noted for its visuals and action sequences, despite a somewhat convoluted plot. Although based on a shōjo manga, the series contains intense and graphic violence, which is atypical for most shōjo works.
