"Pro Golfer Saru" is a Japanese golf manga series created by Fujiko Fujio Ⓐ. It was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Sunday from 1974 to 1980 and is one of the early golf-themed manga in shōnen manga. The story revolves around Sarumaru Sarutani, nicknamed "Saru", a wild boy with prodigious golfing talent. He earns his living through betting on golf and faces off against various opponents. The manga's world is set in an alternate "underground golf world" with exaggerated characters and techniques, as well as bizarre courses that are not found in the real world. In 1985, "Pro Golfer Saru" was adapted into a television anime series produced by Shin-Ei Animation. It aired on TV Asahi from April 2, 1985, to June 13, 1988, for a total of 153 episodes. The anime adaptation faithfully reproduced the story of the manga, while also adding original characters and rearranging the story to appeal to a television audience. The anime series gained significant popularity both in Japan and overseas, becoming a nostalgic memory for many.
