Medabots, known in Japan as Medarot (メダロット), is a Japanese role-playing video game franchise created by Rin Horuma and owned by Imagineer. The series primarily focuses on collecting and battling with robots called “Medabots”. The games have been mainly released on Nintendo platforms including the Game Boy, GameCube, DS, and 3DS handhelds. The series was adapted into two Japanese anime television series, the first animated by Bee Train and the second, Medarot Damashii, by Production I.G. These series aired on TV Tokyo from 1999 to 2001. Nelvana licensed both series for English localization, which were broadcast on YTV in Canada and Fox Kids and ABC Family in the US from 2001 to 2004. A manga series by Horuma was also serialized in Comic BomBom magazine and later published by Kodansha. While the first manga, Medarot, was never translated into English, Medarot 2 was licensed by Viz Media for North American release under the name Medabots. Only Medabots (a remake of Medarot 2 for GBA), Medabots AX, and Medabots Infinity have been released in North America. Kotobukiya has produced plastic models of the robots. A compilation, Medarot Classics Plus, featuring the first eight main games, was released in 2020.
