Black Lagoon (stylized as BLACK LAGOON) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Rei Hiroe, serialized in Shogakukan's Monthly Sunday Gene-X since 2002. The story is set in mid-1990s Southeast Asia and centers around the Lagoon Company, a group of pirate mercenaries who engage in smuggling and other illicit activities. The core members include Rokuro Okajima (nicknamed 'Rock'), a former Japanese salaryman who joins the group; Revy, a skilled and ruthless gunfighter; Dutch, the African-American leader of the group; and Benny, a tech expert and mechanic. Based in the fictional crime city of Roanapur, Thailand, they are often caught in conflicts with various criminal organizations, such as the Russian mafia, Chinese triads, and the Japanese Yakuza. Known for its gritty style, intense gunfights, and realistic portrayal of the criminal underworld, Black Lagoon has been adapted into an anime series by Madhouse, which includes two seasons of television anime and an OVA series. The anime adaptation faithfully recreates the violent aesthetics and dark humor of the manga. The series has gained international popularity, with both the manga and anime being released in multiple countries.
