NAGASAKI 1945: Angelus no Kane is an anime film produced by Mushi Production in 2005. Set against the backdrop of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki in August 1945, the film tells the story of a young doctor working at a converted theological seminary on the outskirts of the city. The film depicts the chaos and despair that followed the bombing, and how medical personnel struggled to save lives amidst the horrific reality. Based on the biographical work of Tatsuichiro Akizuki, the anime realistically portrays the events of the time, showcasing the immense trauma inflicted upon Nagasaki by the atomic bomb. The "Angelus no Kane" (Angelus Bells) in the title refers to the bell of Urakami Cathedral, which was destroyed in the bombing but later recovered, becoming a symbol of the Nagasaki bombing. This anime is both a memorial to the Nagasaki atomic bombing and a tribute to the resilience of the human spirit and humanitarian ideals.
