"Who's Behind You?" is an autobiographical essay and children's literature work by Kayoko Ebina, which recounts her personal experiences during the Pacific War. Published in 1985, it was adapted into an animated theatrical film of the same name in 1991. The animation's screen composition was handled by Sunao Katabuchi, who later directed "In This Corner of the World." The story is set in Tokyo during the year 1940, depicting the daily life of the protagonist, Kayoko (Ebina herself), with her family and friends. As the war breaks out, Kayoko is forced to evacuate, separating from her loved ones. The animation not only shows the cruelty of war but also portrays the human warmth and nostalgia for the downtown Tokyo of the pre-war era. The nursery rhyme "Who's Behind You?" which appears in the story, originates from the traditional Japanese game "Kagome Kagome," and is used as the theme of the movie.
