"Gunbuster: The Movie" (2006) is a re-edited and compiled version of the 1988 OVA anime "Gunbuster." The movie retains the core plot of the original, telling the story of young Noriko Takaya who, following in her father's footsteps, enters Okinawa Girls Space Pilot High School with the goal of becoming a space pilot. Despite her average talent, under the strict guidance of Coach Koichiro Ohta, she is selected alongside the exceptional student Kazumi Amano to pilot the new decisive battle weapon "Gunbuster," and engage in a fierce battle against space monsters. The movie condenses the six episodes of the original, focusing on the main story and action sequences. Though some character development and details are sacrificed, it retains the essence of the original, presenting a space epic filled with passion, friendship, effort, and science fiction, while exploring profound themes such as the passage of time, the wounds of war, and humanity. This movie is also an important review of director Hideaki Anno's early work, showcasing his unique style and themes.
