Genesis of Aquarion is a Japanese science fiction anime television series written and directed by Shoji Kawamori and produced by Satelight. Set in the future, a giant fighting machine called the Aquarion is humanity's only effective weapon against the technologically advanced species called the Shadow Angels. The series is a homage to the Super Robot shows of the 1970s and 1980s, executed with modern animation techniques and aesthetics. The story takes place 12,000 years ago, when humanity was oppressed by the Shadow Angels, until a Shadow Angel named Apollonius fell in love with a human warrior, Seliane, and joined forces with humans using the legendary robot Aquarion. In the present, after a great catastrophe, the Shadow Angels reappear and start harvesting human life energy. The organization DEAVA uses the three ancient fighter planes, the Vectors, to form the Aquarion to fight the Shadow Angels. Apollo, the protagonist, is thought to be Apollonius' reincarnation. The series is known for its unique mecha designs, music, and merging sequences. It has spawned an OVA and a sequel titled Aquarion EVOL.
