"The Sea Prince and the Fire Child" (Japanese: シリウスの伝説, Shiriusu no Densetsu) is a 1981 Japanese anime film produced by Sanrio, based on a story by Shintaro Tsuji. It is considered a loose retelling of Romeo and Juliet, revolving around the love story between Sirius, the son of the water god Glaucus, and Malta, the daughter of the fire goddess Themis. Set in ancient times, the story begins with Glaucus and Themis being close friends before the wind god Argon, driven by jealousy, turned them against each other, leading to a war between water and fire clans. After the war, the highest god punished Argon and entrusted his power source, the Eye, to Glaucus. Themis created a Holy Flame by the sea to protect her fire people. Years later, Sirius and Malta meet and fall in love, but are destined to face opposition from their respective clans. They strive to find a star where fire and water can coexist and ultimately sacrifice themselves for their love. The film is known for its beautiful visuals and moving music, and remains a classic in Sanrio's animation catalog.
