GeGeGe no Kitaro (2007) is the fifth anime television series in the GeGeGe no Kitaro franchise. Produced by Toei Animation, it aired on Fuji TV and other FNS stations from April 1, 2007, to March 29, 2009, for a total of 100 episodes. The series focuses on the adventures of Kitaro and his family as they deal with mysterious happenings in the town of Yokai Yokocho. This adaptation is notable for its emphasis on the lives and struggles of yokai, particularly within Yokai Yokocho. Neko-Musume is promoted to a main character, appearing in every episode alongside Kitaro and Medama-Oyaji, while Nezumi-Otoko's role is reduced. Yokai such as Kawauso and Azuki-Arai, who previously had limited appearances, receive more screen time. The series also introduced the 47 Yokai Warriors, allies of Kitaro representing each of Japan's 47 prefectures. Despite the staff's hopes for a multi-year run, the series was abruptly canceled due to budget cuts and the promotion of the Dragon Ball series. However, it is remembered for its unique portrayal of yokai and social commentary.
