Tears to Tiara (ティアーズ・トゥ・ティアラ) is a Japanese visual novel series developed by Leaf/AQUAPLUS, beginning with a tactical role-playing game for Windows released on April 28, 2005, in Japan. The series is heavily influenced by Welsh, Celtic, Christian, and Roman mythology, with characters named after figures from Arthurian legend. Set in a fantasy world inspired by Late Antiquity, the story begins on the island of Erin (or Hibernia), west of the Holy Empire. The game was later remade for the PlayStation 3 as Tears to Tiara: Garland of the Earth, removing adult content and adding new scenarios and 3D gameplay. The plot centers around Riannon, a priestess of the Gael tribe, who is kidnapped as a sacrifice to resurrect the demon lord Arawn. Upon resurrection, Arawn refuses the sacrifice and instead joins Riannon and her brother Arthur in their fight against the Holy Empire. The series also includes a sequel, Tears to Tiara II: Heir of the Overlord, as well as anime and manga adaptations. The anime aired in 2009, following Arawn's adventures leading the tribe against the Empire, incorporating additional scenarios and characters from the PS3 version.
