永遠のフィレーナ

Eternal Filena is a fantasy light novel series written by Takeshi Shudo and illustrated by Akemi Takada, which was originally serialized in the Japanese anime magazine Animage from 1984 to 1994. The story follows Filena, a girl raised as a boy, as she fights to restore the ocean kingdom of Filosena, which was destroyed by the Devis Empire. The series has been collected into nine volumes and spawned an OVA anime released from 1992 to 1993, as well as an RPG game released on Super Famicom in 1995. Filena is described as the sole survivor of the royal family of Filosena, raised by her adoptive grandfather Zenna to become a gladiator. She meets Lila, a slave, and together they embark on a journey to free their homeland and discover her true heritage. Eternal Filena was popular enough to rank highly in Animage reader polls as late as 1999. While the OVA anime wasn't very successful, the series' RPG game has drawn attention for its lesbian subtext which was uncommon in role-playing games of the time.
