Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance (ヱヴァンゲリヲン新劇場版:破, Evangerion Shin Gekijōban: Ha) is a 2009 Japanese animated film written and chiefly directed by Hideaki Anno. It's the second film in the Rebuild of Evangelion tetralogy, which is based on the original anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion. The film continues the story from Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone, with Shinji Ikari still piloting an Evangelion against the Angels. While incorporating many elements from the original series, it also introduces new characters like Mari Illustrious Makinami, new Angels, and Evangelion designs, integrating 3D CG technology. The film's ending sets up major departures from the original storyline in Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo. The plot involves the Third Angel escaping containment, leading to Mari's introduction as a new pilot who destroys it. Shinji also meets Asuka, starting a new set of battles and interpersonal relationships. The movie incorporates new characters, battles, plot developments, and deviations from the original story, making it more complex and engaging.
