Akikan! (Japanese: アキカン!, lit. "Empty Can!") is a Japanese light novel series created by Riku Ranjō and illustrated by Hiro Suzuhira. It revolves around a group of anthropomorphic drink cans who engage in battles. The first novel was released on May 24, 2007, and as of April 24, 2009, eight volumes have been published by Shueisha under their Super Dash Bunko label. The series has also been adapted into a manga and anime. The manga adaptation began serialization in Ultra Jump on October 18, 2008, while the anime adaptation began airing on January 3, 2009. The story follows high school student Kakeru Daichi, whose melon soda can magically transforms into a human girl. More "akikan" girls appear, needing carbon dioxide from their respective drinks to survive. The "akikan" were created as part of the 'Akikan Elect' to determine the superior can type, steel or aluminum. They must battle until only the strongest remains. The series is known for its unique premise and lively characters.
