Shiki (屍鬼), meaning "Corpse Demon," is a Japanese horror novel written by Fuyumi Ono, originally published in 1998 and reprinted in 2002. The story is set in the secluded village of Sotoba in the 1990s, where a series of mysterious deaths occur following the arrival of a strange family. Toshio Ozaki, the head of the local hospital, begins investigating these deaths, suspecting an epidemic, but soon uncovers a supernatural cause: vampires known as "Shiki." Concurrently, a young man named Natsuno Yuuki finds himself surrounded by death. The novel was adapted into a manga series and an anime series, the latter produced by Daume and broadcast in 2010. The narrative explores themes of horror, suspense, and the supernatural, examining human nature and the concept of death. The Shiki are undead beings who must feed on human blood to survive and possess enhanced healing and hypnotic abilities. Some retain aspects of their humanity, while others descend into madness. A superior subspecies of Shiki, the Jinrou, also exists, displaying different characteristics and powers.
